Project Overview
CHItaly 2017 Paper featuring an Interactive, Tangible Display Design

__

This project was accepted to CHItaly 2017. It is a tangible, interactive display that encourages visual-spatial exploration of the island of Madeira. Users can touch materials such as rocks and plants from various parts of the island to reveal information on the display. For example, the display would show where that material came from.

We wanted to provide visitors of the island of Madeira a way to learn about the island through an engaging experience. However, we wanted to go beyond a simple interactive touch display. We wanted a more natural interaction that allowed you to feel a connection with the island.

Here you see a display with compartments below it. In each compartment is an object from various parts of the island. These objects can include a rock found in the mountains. As you touch the rock, information about the mountain the rock came from would appear on the display. This story is the fundamental concept for our design.

Upon Iteration, we wanted to find more elegant ways to set-up the arrangement. In the previous iteration, the objects protrude from the display like almost like a "Wack-a-Mole" game. We wanted to create a more integrated design.

Here, we reach our latest iteration of an elegant, integrated design. The objects the user touches are embedded into the wall. Additionally, the display is placed in the middle of the objects. This allows for multiple people to view the display unobstructed.

Interaction Design
including Instagram photos as location imagery

As a material is touched, photos from the island would appear on the screen. These photos are sourced from Instagram based on the location of where the material is from. Users are able to swipe these photos in order to explore the scenery of that location.
